Broadcom’s latest earnings call did not merely offer another upbeat semiconductor narrative. It offered something rarer and more consequential: a quantifiable, customer-linked, supply-backed view into the next stage of the artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout. The central disclosure was extraordinary. Broadcom said it now has “line of sight” to AI chip revenue in excess of $100 billion in 2027, after reporting first-quarter AI revenue of $8.4 billion, up 106% year over year, and guiding to $10.7 billion in AI revenue for the following quarter. Management also said it has secured critical leading-edge wafer, high-bandwidth memory, and substrate capacity through 2028. These are not abstract aspirations. They are operational claims tied to customer roadmaps, supply reservations, and specific deployment milestones (Broadcom Inc., 2026; Singh, 2026). (The Motley Fool)
I would frame this as a major inflection point, but several of its most dramatic claims need refinement. Broadcom did not publicly identify all six customers, and it did not confirm that the two unnamed buyers are ByteDance and Apple. It confirmed Google, Anthropic, Meta, and OpenAI, while referring to two other customers without naming them. Likewise, the market's broader claim that AI spending is “irreversible” is rhetorically effective but analytically imprecise. A better formulation is that AI demand is becoming structurally sticky because the technology is increasingly embedded in workflows, enterprise software, cloud platforms, and consumer applications, while the cost of abandoning those integrations rises over time. That distinction matters. It replaces hype with a stronger thesis: not inevitability, but durable adoption underpinned by productivity gains, organizational learning, and infrastructure lock-in (Brynjolfsson et al., 2023; Stanford HAI, 2025; Hughes et al., 2026).
Broadcom’s strategic relevance rests on its position in two layers of the stack at once. It is not just helping customers design custom accelerators, which it describes as XPUs or ASICs, but also supplying the Ethernet switching, routing, NICs, PHYs, optical components, and rack-level interconnect necessary to make very large AI clusters work at commercial scale. In its 2025 Form 10-K, Broadcom said its AI semiconductor solutions include custom accelerators, Ethernet switching and routing silicon, Ethernet NICs, physical-layer devices, optical components, and in some cases racks and systems. That matters because AI economics are not determined by compute chips alone. They are determined by the cost, power efficiency, and scalability of the entire cluster. Broadcom is therefore leveraged not only to the rise of custom silicon, but to the networking intensity of ever-larger training and inference domains (Broadcom Inc., 2025). (SEC)
This is why the zero-sum framing that often dominates semiconductor commentary is too crude. Nvidia remains the benchmark supplier for frontier training and for many inference workloads, but Broadcom is not trying to win by replacing Nvidia everywhere. Instead, it is winning where hyperscalers and frontier-model companies want custom architectures optimized for their own economics, workload mix, and system design. On the earnings call, Hock Tan explicitly pushed back against the notion that one-size-fits-all GPUs are the only durable answer, arguing that custom silicon increasingly has advantages for specific inference and model-serving workloads. Reuters’ reporting on the call reinforces that Broadcom’s AI opportunity is being driven by demand for custom chips in a market still dominated by Nvidia, not by the disappearance of Nvidia’s role (Broadcom Inc., 2026; Singh, 2026). After my research and reading, I would argue that training is not dead, but the more rigorous conclusion is that the market is bifurcating rather than abandoning training. Stanford’s 2025 AI Index notes that training compute at the frontier continues to expand rapidly, while model and hardware economics are simultaneously improving. At the same time, the inference cost of a system performing at GPT-3.5 level fell more than 280-fold between November 2022 and October 2024, and hardware costs declined while energy efficiency improved. In plain English, this means lower inference costs do not kill demand. They widen it. They make more applications economically viable, which in turn raises the need for more total compute, more specialized serving infrastructure, and more optimized chips for differentiated workloads. Google’s Ironwood TPU, explicitly positioned as its first TPU for the “age of inference,” is emblematic of this shift. Yet Google also makes clear that TPUs continue to power both training and serving. The industry is not moving from training to inference in a neat handoff; it is adding a second track of demand on top of the first (Google Cloud, 2025; Stanford HAI, 2025). (blog.google)
On the demand side, the case for persistence is stronger when tied to adoption data rather than metaphor. Stanford HAI reports that 78% of organizations surveyed said they were using AI in 2024, up from 55% the year before. Brynjolfsson, Li, and Raymond found a 14% average productivity gain from generative AI assistance in a real workplace setting, with much larger gains for less experienced workers and improvements in customer sentiment and employee retention. Anthropic, meanwhile, said in October 2025 that it serves more than 300,000 business customers and that its number of large accounts had grown nearly sevenfold in the prior year. These are not proof that every AI dollar will earn an attractive return, but they are strong evidence that usage is diffusing beyond pilot projects and into normal economic activity. That is the real basis for durable infrastructure spending (Brynjolfsson et al., 2023; Stanford HAI, 2025; Anthropic, 2025a).
Customer by customer, Broadcom’s disclosures add unusual granularity. Google remains the anchor relationship. On the call, Broadcom said demand for Google’s seventh-generation TPU is strong in 2026 and should strengthen further in 2027 and beyond with next-generation TPU demand. Google’s own disclosures help explain why. Alphabet said it expects 2026 capital expenditures of $175 billion to $185 billion, with the vast majority of 2025 capex already going to technical infrastructure and about 60% of that toward servers. It also said it is investing in AI compute capacity to support frontier-model development and cloud demand. In other words, Broadcom’s Google commentary is consistent with Alphabet’s own spending trajectory. The notion that Google is on the verge of “designing Broadcom out” is therefore possible only in the most theoretical sense. In practice, the current growth path still points to dependence on specialized partners that can co-develop, scale, and supply complex silicon systems at hyperscale speed (Alphabet, 2026; Broadcom Inc., 2026). Anthropic is perhaps the most revealing case because it sits at the intersection of frontier-model ambition, multi-supplier compute strategy, and energy reality. Broadcom said Anthropic is on track for about 1 gigawatt of TPU compute in 2026 and more than 3 gigawatts in 2027. Anthropic separately said it uses a diversified compute strategy spanning Google TPUs, Amazon Trainium, and Nvidia GPUs, and that the expansion of Google TPU capacity is meant to support rapidly growing customer demand. In February 2026, Anthropic also stated that training a single frontier AI model will soon require gigawatts of power and that the U.S. AI sector will need at least 50 gigawatts of capacity over the next several years. This matters for two reasons. First, it confirms that Broadcom’s disclosed gigawatt figures are plausible within customers’ own infrastructure narratives. Second, it shows that the bottleneck in AI is increasingly not only chips, but energy and grid integration. That deepens the investment case for vendors that can deliver not just silicon, but system-level efficiency (Anthropic, 2025a, 2026; Singh, 2026). (Anthropic)
Meta offers perhaps the clearest rebuttal to the lazy “winner-take-all” interpretation of AI semis. Broadcom said reports of a slowdown in Meta’s MTIA roadmap were mistaken and stated plainly that Meta’s custom accelerator roadmap is “alive and well” and that Broadcom is “shipping now,” with next-generation XPUs scaling to multiple gigawatts in 2027 and beyond. Meta’s own financial disclosures make that plausible: it reported $72.2 billion of 2025 capital expenditures and guided to $115 billion to $135 billion for 2026, largely to support AI infrastructure and superintelligence efforts. The proper conclusion is not that Meta has chosen Broadcom over Nvidia or AMD. It is that Meta is building a heterogeneous stack across its own silicon, merchant GPUs, and partner-developed custom accelerators. That is exactly the kind of environment in which Broadcom can thrive, because it monetizes architecture diversification rather than requiring exclusivity (Meta Platforms, 2026; Broadcom Inc., 2026; Singh, 2026). OpenAI’s inclusion as Broadcom’s sixth customer is equally consequential. Broadcom said OpenAI is expected to deploy its first-generation XPU in volume in 2027 at over 1 gigawatt of compute capacity. OpenAI then announced in February 2026 that it was raising $110 billion in new investment and described demand as surging across consumers, developers, and businesses. That financing does not guarantee flawless execution, and OpenAI’s infrastructure sourcing remains diversified, but it does materially strengthen the case that OpenAI can support multiple large compute commitments at once. Therefore my broader point that OpenAI is becoming too large to rely on a single hardware pathway is therefore sound. What should be avoided is the inference that Broadcom’s OpenAI program, by itself, eliminates spending on Nvidia, AMD, or cloud partners. Where most long-term AVGO investors overreaches most is in the treatment of the remaining unnamed customers. Broadcom did say that customers four and five are seeing strong shipments this year that it expects to more than double in 2027, but it did not identify them. Market speculation has ranged widely, and the market sentiment's suggestion that ByteDance and Apple are the “leading candidates” is not something Broadcom has confirmed. The responsible analytical position is simple: the company has disclosed six major custom-silicon customers, four are publicly discussed, two remain undisclosed, and any effort to name them should be labeled speculation rather than fact. In an era of social-media amplification, that distinction is not cosmetic; it is essential to accuracy and credibility (Broadcom Inc., 2026). (The Motley Fool)
The gigawatt math behind the $100 billion target is one of the most interesting parts of the call, but it also requires precision. Broadcom said it is seeing 2027 demand “getting close to 10” gigawatts and that dollars per gigawatt vary, sometimes dramatically, by customer. On the Q&A, Bernstein’s Stacy Rasgon floated an analyst heuristic of roughly $20 billion per gigawatt, and Hock Tan replied that this was “not far” from the relevant range, while still stressing variability. Thus, I was right when I said (in my private trading and investment group chat) that gigawatt-based reasoning supports the plausibility of the 2027 outlook, but I was wrong to present any single dollars-per-gigawatt figure as settled company guidance. The better conclusion (after listening to the earning call and deeper research) is that Broadcom’s disclosed customer volumes, combined with management’s acknowledgment that the heuristic is directionally reasonable, make the $100 billion target credible without making the revenue conversion formula fixed or uniform (Broadcom Inc., 2026). What, then, about the road to a $3 trillion market capitalization? Here in my essay, I must separate possibility from inevitability. Broadcom’s bull case I believe is not fantasy. The company already has a proven record of operating leverage, strong margins, rising free cash flow, and capital return. Its 2025 annual report shows that custom AI accelerators and AI networking were already major drivers of semiconductor revenue growth, and the March 2026 call suggests that 2027 could represent another order-of-magnitude step-up. If Broadcom’s chip-only AI revenue truly exceeds $100 billion in 2027 while networking continues to scale and software remains resilient, the company’s earnings power could justify a very large revaluation from its already elevated base. But a $3 trillion outcome would still depend on several things going right at once: sustained customer capex, successful volume ramps, continued supply-chain execution, no major margin collapse, and investor willingness to capitalize 2027 and 2028 earnings well before they are fully realized. It is a plausible scenario, not a baseline fact (Broadcom Inc., 2025, 2026; Singh, 2026). (SEC)
There are real risks, and a serious essay (I write my essay after much due diligence as long-term investor in AVGO) must state them plainly. First, customer concentration is extreme. Broadcom itself emphasizes that the opportunity is driven by only six buyers. That concentration creates enormous upside if roadmaps hold, but meaningful downside if even one major program slips. Second, the energy side of the AI buildout is becoming a first-order constraint. The IEA projects global data-center electricity consumption to roughly double to around 945 TWh by 2030 in its base case, with AI-driven accelerated servers accounting for nearly half the increase. Anthropic’s public comments reinforce that frontier AI now requires power-system scale planning, not just semiconductor procurement. Third, the capex cycle remains politically and financially exposed. Governments are increasing AI regulation, and even the best-capitalized hyperscalers still have to prove that extraordinary infrastructure spending translates into durable returns. Finally, the economics of custom silicon are not automatically superior in every use case. They depend on workload specificity, software maturity, deployment scale, and the customer’s willingness to absorb design complexity (International Energy Agency, 2025; Anthropic, 2026; Stanford HAI, 2025; Lal & You, 2025). The deepest insight I wish to impart is therefore not that Broadcom has six important customers. It is that the AI infrastructure market is maturing into a multi-architecture, multi-supplier, power-constrained, network-heavy system in which custom silicon and merchant GPUs will coexist. Broadcom’s advantage is that it sits exactly where this coexistence becomes monetizable: between model ambition and physical deployment, between custom compute and cluster networking, between roadmap design and supply-chain reservation. The company is not merely riding AI enthusiasm. It is becoming one of the firms that translate AI ambition into real hardware schedules, real power loads, and real revenue recognition. That is why the latest call mattered. It did not prove every bullish projection I spoken about over the years in my private trading and investment group chat. But it did materially strengthen the claim that Broadcom has moved from being an AI beneficiary to being one of the core industrial organizers of the AI era (Broadcom Inc., 2025, 2026; Google Cloud, 2025; Meta Platforms, 2026).
